Introduction
Unique Curriculum for a Changing World
Wartburg’s engineering programs provide students with a unique combination of technical expertise, mathematical and scientific skills, and a true liberal arts perspective. In addition to offering concentrations in mechanical and electrical engineering, Wartburg’s engineering program emphasizes breadth of background and prepares graduates who can see the “big picture,” a trait employers value.
In addition to the rigorous curriculum, our students are encouraged to take full advantage of the college community. Many of our graduates have participated in athletics or music ensembles and held key leadership roles in student organizations. The college’s facilities, which include a new Innovation Studio, give students a chance to work with a variety of technologies, including a 3-D printer, laser cutter, and conventional and CNC machining equipment.

Students pursuing an engineering major and another major with a B.A. designation may choose to earn either a B.S. or B.A. degree. Students may not major in both engineering and engineering science.

First-year Engineering
In their first engineering course, Wartburg students learn about the design process and the service nature of engineering by redesigning children’s games for kids with disabilities.
Robotic Design Competition
As part of the electronics course, student teams design, build and test autonomous robots. Public demonstrations are held each year on RICE Day.
Senior Design
In senior design, Wartburg students partner with nonprofits in our community and around the world to design, build, test, and deliver a device engineered to solve a problem that the students and community partner identify together.
Upon graduation, you will be well-positioned to choose between industrial employment and graduate study. Our graduates have taken positions in design, research, development, technical sales, or as field engineers. Students following this path are encouraged to minor in fields such as business, art, English, or communication arts. Some of our graduates choose to get Master’s degrees within an engineering specialty, and for them, we recommend a minor in biology, chemistry, physics or computer science – depending on their intended area of specialization. All Wartburg engineers are strongly encouraged to minor in mathematics.
4+1 M.S. in Engineering
Wartburg College students interested in a master’s degree in industrial engineering can begin earning credits toward the end of the summer after their junior year, thanks to a partnership with Iowa State University. The “4+1” cooperative program allows students to earn a bachelor’s degree in engineering science from Wartburg and a master’s degree in industrial engineering from Iowa State in just five years. Wartburg students begin a graduate-level research project through Iowa State the summer between their junior and senior years. Some senior-level coursework will be substituted with graduate-level online courses from Iowa State. Additional information about the ISU graduate program is available at www.imse.iastate.edu.
