Introduction
The German program provides students with a contemporary understanding of German culture and a fluid grasp of conversational and written German.
Courses are balanced between German literature and cultural studies and language-based courses that foster a comprehensive understanding of Germany's past and present.
German majors are required to spend one or two semesters in either Germany or Austria.
The Major
The Bachelor of Arts in German requires a minimum of 34 credits:
- GERM 201, 202 Second-Year German. (8 credits)
- GERM 301, 302 Third-Year German. (8 credits)
- Three courses numbered GRMN 400 or higher (excluding GRMN 490 and GRMN 495) on campus and/or courses from approved off-campus study centers. One of these courses must be an approved literature course taken during the study abroad semester in Germany or Austria, and one must be either GRMN 401 or GRMN 402 (12).
- One or two semesters at an approved program in Germany or Austria, with two courses per semester applied toward the major.
- One course in Art History, Economics, Government, History, or Philosophy chosen in consultation with the faculty of the German program. Coursework must reflect a German component. May be done during study abroad (4 credits).
- Successful completion (equivalent of 2.0 or higher) of GRMN 395 Capstone Preparation (1), GRMN 490 Senior Capstone I (1), GRMN 495 Senior Capstone II (1).
- A passing grade of “ausreichend” (satisfactory) on the Goethe Institute’s B2 international German language exam.
The Minor
The minor in German requires a minimum of 28 credits:
- GERM 201, 202 Second-Year German. (8 credits)
- GERM 301, 302 Third-Year German. (8 credits)

General Education Requirements
General Education is a broad description of the curriculum that embodies our commitment to a liberal arts education at the University of Redlands. Our general education conveys the range of fields of study, ways of thinking, and practices of scholarship and creativity that enable students to graduate as critical thinkers capable of innovatively and collaboratively adapting to challenges that come their way in the future.
Our general education is comprised of a Liberal Arts Inquiry (LAI) or Liberal Arts Foundation (LAF) curriculum.
- Entering first-year students and transfer students arriving with fewer than 32 credits in Fall 2018 will follow the LAI curriculum.
- All transfer and returning students with 32 credits or more (i.e., sophomores, juniors, and seniors) in Fall 2018 will follow the LAF curriculum.

a. Communicate written and oral information accurately and clearly enough to be understood by sympathetic native speakers of German without misrepresentation or confusion;
b. Compose written documents with logic and clarity, following applicable conventions.
2. Written German
a. Identify and interpret key texts in German literary and cultural traditions, such as major movements, writers, and works;
b. Apply cultural and interpretive analysis to evaluate literary and non-literary written German.
3. Cultural Competence
a. Differentiate American and German cultural norms;
b. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of German cultural behavior in order to function effectively within German culture.
