Why do some cars or airplanes experience more drag than others? How do we calculate the orbit of a satellite? How are partially autonomous vehicles controlled? How fast does blood flow through our veins? While the degree program in Mathematics is concerned with abstract matters, the emphasis of the Applied Mathematics program is on constructing mathematical models to solve problems, simulate practical situations, and analyze the results. For example, you may make a model to compute the flow of water or blood or the flow fields around the wing of an airplane. Or, you may work on operating systems for robots, airplanes, or satellites. While the ability to think abstractly is just as important as it is for Mathematics, in Applied Mathematics you also learn to structure your reasoning and draw conclusions. The University of Groningen offers degree programs in both Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. The first year is largely the same for both Bachelor’s programs, during which you explore the programs and gradually work towards your specialization. It is possible to switch programs at the end of the first year. Applied Mathematics is an international Bachelor’s degree program. All of the course units are taught in English, which gives Applied Mathematics an extra dimension as many of your fellow students and lecturers will come from abroad. -

The aim of the Mathematics Department is to provide students with a sound background in both pure and applied Mathematics while inculcating respect for objective reasoning, clear ideas, and precise expression (elements which truly characterize a liberal arts education). Our goal is to make students sophisticated in the way they think and in the way they approach problems. This heightened sophistication should extend beyond the boundaries of Mathematics into other areas. -

This is an academic programme designed for students with a strong interest in mathematics, mathematical statistics and scientific computing. Flexibility and individual adaptation are keywords. A vast variety of courses in mathematics, statistics and numerical analysis are available within the programme and can be combined with courses from all other science areas, economics and finance, engineering, humanities and social sciences available at our university or within an exchange programme with other universities. For students with a strong interest in pure mathematics, the programme offers a path of courses at a higher theoretical level that can be continued at Master’s and even further at PhD level. For those students interested in more applied areas, there is a high degree of flexibility in choosing course combinations suitable for certain professions. -

How do population dynamics work in a predator-prey system? How are the prime numbers distributed among the natural numbers? How do you model – and therefore prevent – the spread of infectious diseases? These questions can only be answered by using mathematics. During this Bachelor’s program, you will have the chance to work on assignments about topics like these from your first year onwards. Whether that's pure mathematical structures or their application in modern society, this program has it covered. -
