An Art History graduate can look forward to a career in museum curation, art advising, art law and enforcement, corporate consulting, appraising and more. Art History students study the history of the visual arts in their cultural and social context. Students learn to describe, analyze, and interpret the form and content of works of art and become familiar with art history theory, methods of analysis and art criticism.

The art history program acquaints students with the visual culture of humankind through the ages — works of art as individual organizations of shape, space and color and as cultural artifacts with a history and function within their societies linked to other forms of cultural production.

You'll find Hanover students exploring firsthand the masterpieces on display in cities as close as Cincinnati and as far away Florence, Italy, and Paris, France.

As an art history major at Mason, you'll investigate works of art to learn about how and why they were made, and about the people who made them. You'll study art as a form of personal expression and a record of its historical moment by understanding not only the artwork's aesthetic qualities, but also the way art influences and is influenced by culture, technology, and economics. The expertise of our faculty extends to many world regions – the United States, Latin America, Europe, the Mediterranean, South and Southeast Asia, China, and the Islamic world – and overall historical periods. This major has flexible requirements and you will receive individualized attention to help you adapt your art history studies to your interests.

The Art History Option offers students a diversity of exposure to the styles and subjects of cultures and nations of the Western and non-Western world, from prehistoric times to the contemporary era. Particular emphasis is placed on developing the student's ability to critically understand the ideas and imagery found within the art works of various cultures and individual artists and architects. The Art Studio program is designed to deliver a broad range of hands-on studio practices to the art major. Areas of focus include painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, ceramics, printmaking, and time-based media. Course choices/sequences are determined by the student according to major distribution requirements.

The B.A. in Art History is designed to provide students with the social history of art, communication skills, research techniques, and methods of critical inquiry that have become a vital part of contemporary life. Course offerings cover a wide range of art-historical topics around the world (Renaissance and Baroque Art, Modern and Contemporary Art, Asian Art, Native American and African Art), encouraging students to become responsible citizens through an understanding of the aesthetic, cultural and ethical choices inherent in human development.
