Child-centred learning

Are you interested in a career in early childhood education? USQ’s Bachelor of Early Childhood will give you the attributes required in early childhood education and childcare sector. With an emphasis on the knowledge, skills, practices, and values inherent in contemporary understandings of best practice in early childhood education, you will be well-positioned to work with children and families in an array of early learning environments.

With USQ, you will have the chance to study your early childhood degree online, on-campus, or a combination of both.

Gain professional experience

You will receive practical career experience with 80 days of targeted professional experience placements. It is suggested, for both international and domestic students, that 50% of professional placement is carried out in Australia.

Already have an Early Childhood qualification?

Already have an early childhood qualification from TAFE or another recognized provider? USQ may be able to offer you credit to help you finish your degree faster.

Professional accreditation

This programme is approved with the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA).

Our Bachelor of Early Childhood does not qualify for teacher registration with the Queensland College of Teachers. If you are looking for teacher registration, we recommend studying the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood).

Career outcomes

As a graduate, you will have the skills, knowledge, and experience required to work in a range of prior to school learning environments, including early education and care centres and family daycare programmes as a director, educator, supervisor or as a group leader.

Professional experience

In addition to the courses listed below, you will also need to complete professional experience. These experiences provide you with opportunities to put theory into practice.

Courses to be studied

  • 9 x core courses (9 units)
  • 8 x shared courses (8 units)
  • 7 x early childhood courses (7 units)
  • plus 80 days of professional experience

How much will it cost?

Approximate annual costs for your first year of study (8 units) in this programme are:

Study Mode/ Cost

  • Commonwealth supported: AUD 6,344
  • Domestic full fee paying: AUD 19,520

You may not have to pay your course (subject) fees upfront. HECS-HELP and FEE-HELP allow you to defer your fees until your income reaches a certain level.

You may also be eligible to receive financial support from Centrelink.

Scholarships and financial assistance

You may be able to apply for scholarships to help with your study costs.

Professional experience

This programme includes a compulsory professional experience component that may involve travel, accommodation and meal expenses.

Entry Requirements

From Semester 1 2020 the following entry requirements will apply:

  • Subject pre-requisites: English (4, SA), Mathematics A (4, SA) or equivalent
  • Year 12 science subject (4 SA) or equivalent
  • Special entry pathways may be available.

Note: All students must be able to meet the physical and other professional requirements of professional experience placements within this degree.

English Language Requirements

You are required to satisfy the applicable English language requirements. This programme requires a minimum of IELTS 7.5 or equivalent.

If you do not meet the English language requirements you may apply to study a University-approved English language programme.

Closing dates

Applying directly to USQ:

  • Semester 3, 2020 - applications close Monday 5 November, with semester 3 commencing on Monday 19 November 2021.
  • Semester 1, 2021 - applications close Monday 18 February, with semester 1 commencing on Monday 25 February 2021.
  • Semester 2, 2021 - applications close Monday 1 July, with semester 2 commencing on Monday 15 July 2021.

If you are applying via QTAC, you will need to check the QTAC closing dates.

Credit for previous study or work experience

You may be eligible for credit if you have previously studied or had relevant work experience. This will help to reduce the number of courses that you need to study to finish your programme.
