In your first and second years, you will be given an introduction to the areas of Social and Developmental Psychology, as well as research methods and data analysis. In the third year you have the opportunity to specialise in the area of psychology that interests you. Specialist areas can include Clinical Psychology, Occupational Psychology, Health Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Social Psychology, Exercise Psychology and more.

You will have the opportunity to undertake work placements and volunteering in a wide range of settings to maximize your practical experience. Past placements have included working with vulnerable young adults at Safer Wales; working with children in secondary schools in a mentoring capacity; in forensic, clinical and health settings, shadowing professionals in areas such as the probation service and hospitals.

Learning & Teaching

A variety of learning and teaching methods are used, such as a lecture series supported by seminars, workshops and tutorials. Learning and teaching is tailored to the needs of students in different modules, so each module will be different developing skills and knowledge appropriate to the subject area. All modules are supported by Moodle, which helps students to access information when it is needed. Notes, reading and discussion boards are used to support student learning.

A personal tutor scheme supports students with academic and pastoral support from the first year onwards, and with Initial Professional Development we work to encourage students to set and achieve their academic and career goals through all three years of the programme.

Employability & Careers

Career opportunities exist for graduates where knowledge of people and how they communicate is valued. The course is an ideal foundation for further study in postgraduate psychology courses leading to a qualification as an occupational, educational, clinical, and forensic or health psychologist, and also leads to other postgraduate courses such as PGCE. Graduates will also be able to enter careers in personnel management, advertising, health promotion and many areas of industry.
