You’ll start to analyse digital communication. Unlock the power of language. What will you create? You’ll have a unique chance to put your learning into practice when you join a department at the University of Hertfordshire. In the second year, you’ll further explore special educational needs and disabilities. You’ll discuss stereotypes, misconceptions, and prejudice. This course offers you the opportunity to enhance your study and CV by studying abroad in semester B of your second year of study. The University has partnerships with over 150 universities around the world, including the USA, Canada, Asia, Africa, Australia, South America and closer to home in Europe.
We’ll ask you to make your decision in your second year, so there is plenty of time to think about it.
Work placement
You will undertake one work or community-based module at each level of the course. Throughout the course, you will reflect on, and analyse, your own practice and experience. You will be supported in this through seminars, lectures, and tutorials, on-campus or online. These work-based enquiry modules aim to provide you with:
- the opportunity to experience real-world contexts
- a chance to critically explore the social, communicative and organisational dimensions of a range of workplace contexts, and
- the tools and experiences to develop your employability skills.

You’ll get a personal tutor to guide you through your course, all the way to graduation.
You might also want or need extra support during your time with us. Rest assured, no matter what you study, we’ve got you covered. For help with study skills, including referencing, essay writing and presentations, you’ll have access to our academic support services. You can attend workshops, 1-to-1 sessions and online tutorials. Both our Learning Resource Centers run drop-in study skills sessions. And the best thing is, it’s all free.
Within the School of Education, we have a dedicated Student Success and Engagement Team who are there to support you with your welfare and academic writing support. There are also opportunities to have a peer mentor, who will be a more experienced student specially trained to provide support.

Upon completion, you can take a 1-year Post Graduate Certificate in Education to become a qualified teacher. You could pursue a career in child development or send. Or perhaps, working in marketing and communications is your dream. Or becoming a motivational speaker. You could work in museums and libraries. Maybe, you’d like to work for charities, educating their service users and fundraisers. You could specialise in professional development. Help organisations train their staff. Whatever your career goal, a key focus of the degree is work-based learning where all students will undertake fieldwork in order to provide a context for inquiry, to develop employability skills, and to learn, in a first-hand way, about our communities and how they might usefully contribute to its needs and possibilities. In addition, you may progress onto a Master’s degree in Education, postgraduate Initial Teacher Education through a Postgraduate Certificate in Education in Primary Education, the Post Graduate Diploma Youth, and Community qualification, or an M.A. Conversion to Psychology.
